Smart Home - Definition and Uses

Smart home is really an exciting and trendy subject! So we decided to tell you about it too!

Remote control of your home is now possible with smart home. All you have to do is schedule certain tasks such as opening or closing the shutters, and this can be done even if you are not present. This system saves time for its users but also saves a lot of energy. No wonder it is increasingly appealing to individuals. Focus on this attractive technology.

Smart home refers to the automation and programming of certain repetitive tasks in your home and rotating around 3 axes:

- Optimization of security in the home (example: triggering an alarm at fixed times);

- Management of energy sources in terms of savings (example: shutters closed in winter as soon as night falls to improve window insulation);

- Optimization of communication tools (example: turning on the television for the morning wake-up call).

All this makes it an "intelligent habitat" that can be used in public places, hotels and increasingly in private homes.

 

SMART HOME, FOR WHAT PURPOSES?


If you live in a seven-room house and have to open and close the shutters every day, you will quickly understand that installing a system programmed to operate your shutters at the times you specify allows you more time to do something else.

But that's not all! In winter, when it is dark at 6 p.m. and you don't go home before 8 p.m., you have only two options:

- Leave your shutters closed all day long at the risk of having a damp house,

- Diligent a person to come and open at certain times.

With this intelligent system, you have an additional option: control everything yourself, either by programming the opening and closing times on the computer centre that manages your smart home system, or by sending your order via your mobile. It will all depend on the system you choose.

Being able to decide when to close the shutters can add a few extras to your home: comfort (arriving in the evening in a home at a good temperature that has benefited from the day's sun), energy savings (the shutters insulate your windows in winter) and security (closing your shutters before night helps to avoid theft).

The automation of tasks does not only concern the shutters, judge instead:

- You can turn on your heater or adjust it to your liking, either remotely or by programming it. In summer, it is the air conditioner that can be activated a little before your arrival to allow you to enter a house at the right temperature;

- You will be able to activate the monitoring and security systems at selected times;

- You can also trigger the opening of an electric gate;

- You can turn on your TV (for example: if you want to give the impression that someone is at home, turning on the TV or some lights can create an illusion and deter potential thieves).

 

WHY AND HOW TO BUILD SMART HOME?


Although this intelligent housing system got off to a slow start in the 1980s, it is coming back in force for several reasons:

- We live more in contact with computers, the latter has evolved rapidly and new technologies are there to simplify our lives. As a result, there is no longer any question of connecting the devices to a cumbersome and complicated computer system. This can be done today with a tablet or even a smartphone;

- More than ever, energy savings are at the heart of the debate. However, choosing this system can result in energy savings of up to 30% per year, which also protects the environment.

This control automation system is complex and it is recommended to have it installed by a qualified professional who has all the necessary knowledge for this type of installation (type of wiring, protocols and networks). This system will take into account a certain number of parameters to carry out this installation:

- The number and surface area of the parts;

- The number of controls to be integrated (alarm, heating, shutters, lighting, etc.);

- The tools (mainframe, tablet and/or telephone...)

Good to know: from a technical point of view, networks can be of several kinds: USB, Ethernet or xPL networks. As for the wiring, it will be adapted according to your needs and the surface covered by this system (example: wireless system, installation with wiring or PLC kit system - or X10 system).
